Tsheole Invites Firms to Explore Investment Potential in Botswana

Thapelo Tsheole, the head of the Botswana Stock Exchange (BSE), is calling on businesses to consider investing in Botswana, emphasizing the nation’s efforts to make doing business easier and its attractiveness for foreign investment.

Speaking at an event in Gaborone, where a new report on African investment opportunities was launched, Tsheole highlighted how Botswana is becoming a great place for businesses to grow. He shared how the BSE is working hard to welcome new investors by showing them the benefits of listing on Botswana’s stock market.

He pointed out that the BSE is central to the financial market, helping businesses get the funds they need to expand. The BSE isn’t just about connecting with local businesses; it’s also reached out to international media powerhouses like Bloomberg and CNBC Africa to make Botswana known to the world as a preferred place to invest.

Tsheole believes that investing in Botswana brings lots of benefits. One of the big plus points is the lack of exchange controls in the country, which means money can come in and out freely, making it easier for companies to raise money and grow their operations not just in Botswana but also abroad.

Other strong points include Botswana’s healthy economic policies, which help businesses predict and plan for the future. Moreover, the country’s wealth of savings, particularly from pensions, provides an eager source of investment, eagerly looking for promising opportunities.

Showcasing Botswana’s diverse business landscape, Tsheole mentioned that the companies on the BSE come from all sorts of sectors. Some of these businesses are not just local; they operate regionally and even globally, which shows that they’re doing well and contributing a lot to the country’s economy.

To further stress the BSE’s role in boosting the economy, Tsheole shared some fresh figures: From January 5 to February 4, 2022, the BSE’s market saw transactions worth P117.5 million, with an impressive average daily transaction volume. Notably, foreign companies and individuals were responsible for nearly 18% of these activities, underscoring international interest in Botswana.

An RMB economist, David Kavishe, at the same event, praised Botswana as the fifth-best African country for investment, based on a range of factors including government spending, healthcare, tourism, transportation, and trade.
